Financial Aid, College, and Your Kids

Over the last three decades, college tuition, the cost of living, gas, and other costs associated with living have risen by leaps and bounds. Some people are not having children or are opting to hold off from having children because they can barely afford to support themselves let alone a child.

With that being said, those who do decide to have children will probably be unable to fully pay for their kids tuition. Fortunately, there are a number of financial aid opportunities and grants available to help assist you and your kid so you can get them the education they so desperately need.

The first step your child can take is to talk to their college adviser who can offer them preliminary yet vital information about getting financial aid. There are a plethora of both governmental and privately funded financial aid providers available and it’s important that your child only applies for grants that they are eligible for. Next, your child should fill out a Federal form called FAFSA which allows your kid the ability to apply for government loans.

If your child excels in either sports or academics Universities might offer him/her a partial academic or sports related scholarship. This is an excellent way for your child to save significantly on College tuition. In addition, urge your kid to participate in extra curricular activities such as youth groups, academic clubs and groups, and volunteer time at soup kitchens and/or other notable non-profit or charity organizations.

Besides achieving high marks in their coursework, preparing for the SAT or ACT (depending on where in the country you live) is also vitally important for your child to not only get accepted into quality Universities but also will give your kid a chance at an academic scholarship or government grant.

Lastly, please beware of grant scams or other devious scams that can really hurt you and your child’s reputation, identity, and credit score. Always make sure you do your research as you can go to a website that is seemingly harmless but in reality is trying to steal your most private and sacred information.
